[Waterloo Courier, Wednesday, May 4, 2011]

Dorothy Miller Wood died April 26, 2011, at her home in Colorado Springs, Colo., where she was convalescing and was surrounded by close family and friends.

Dotty, as she was known by all, was born near Waterloo, in the farming community of Orange Township, on July 3, 1922. The daughter of Wally Miller and Bertha Kline Miller, she was the youngest of four siblings, including Perry, Kay and Jean. Her mother, Bertha, died when she was only 7, and she and her three siblings were raised by their father.

She attended Orange Township Church of the Brethren and graduated from high school in 1940. Soon after graduation, she worked for the FBI in Detroit as a secretary. In 1942 she met her husband-to-be, James Robert Wood, and they were married in Fort Wayne, Ind. After World War II they moved to Waco, Texas, where she and Bob raised a family and owned businesses in that city. They lived in Waco until 1971 when they moved to Boulder, Colo.

She and Bob started the A-1 Paramedic Service in Boulder in 1972, which grew to include other cities, including Colorado Springs, Colo., Longmont, Colo., and Cheyenne, Wyo. Dotty acted as secretary and bookkeeper for the business for many years. She worked alongside Bob in all of his schemes and dreams, and Bob relied on her to keep him focused. She organized his life and his businesses. She was his lifelong friend and closest confidant.

Dotty is remembered for many things, but most of all for her love of her husband and family. She was a mother to many who needed the motherly touch. Many women have expressed their appreciation for her guidance in times of difficulty, and she will be remembered fondly for her empathetic spirit.

She and Bob traveled extensively, especially by their motor home, but she hated the "other house to clean." She enjoyed having time with Bob, nevertheless, on his adventures "in the wild." They traveled as far south as Belize and as far north as Alaska and many points between. They also took memorable trips with close friends and one special trip to Scandinavia, England and northern Europe. But it mattered little to Dotty where they went as long as she was with her beloved husband.

They moved in 1985 from Boulder to Lake Havasu City, Ariz., but they returned in 1991 to live permanently in Colorado Springs. She was always involved in helping others, and in 1988 she became a member of PEO, an organization of women dedicated to promoting higher education for young women.

Dotty is survived by her son, Rex and his wife Becky; her daughter, Jane Suits and her husband John; four grandchildren, Adam and Taryn Wood, Justin Suits and his wife April, and Joelle Suits; her brother, Perry; and her sister, Kay of Waterloo. Family has requested that donations be sent to the PEO Chapter House at 1819 W. Cheyenne Road, Colorado Springs, CO 80906

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 14, at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 13990 Glen Eagle Drive, Colorado Springs.

Arrangements under the direction of Swan-Law Funeral Directors, Colorado Springs.
