WATERLOO, IOWA - John Stephen Yates, 63, of Waterloo, died at his home Thursday, April 28, of metastatic melanoma.

He was born Oct. 31, 1947, in Parsons, Kan., son of Willard and Cloeta Foster Yates. He married Lani Dunston on July 13, 1968, in Cedar Rapids.

Mr. Yates graduated from Cedar Rapids Washington in 1966 and earned a bachelor's degree in business management in 1975 from the University of Northern Iowa. He was employed in supply management at John Deere for 31 years, retiring in 2007. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam conflict and was a member of Central Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

Survived by his wife; two sons, Dustin (Kelli Head) of Waterloo and Brett (Deanna) of Boulder, Colo.; his father of Pierson, Fla.; and a sister, Diane (John Lund) Hudson of Marion.

Services 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Central Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), with burial in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Locke Funeral Home, and an hour before services Tuesday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the church or Cedar Valley Hospice.
