WATERLOO - Gilbert M. Schwab, 78, of Waterloo, died Monday, April 25, at Ravenwood Nursing and Rehab Center.

He was born Jan. 17, 1933, in Waterloo, son of John G. and Erna Busch Schwab. He married Charlotte Burns in 1957, and they later divorced. He married Julie Altanis in 1968 in Waterloo.

Mr. Schwab earned an accounting degree from Gates Business College, then served as a corporal in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955. He was a senior computer operator at Rath Meat Packing Plant for 33 years, and later worked for Jim Skarlis, retiring in 2009. He was a member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church and served as secretary for AHEPA for 25 years.

Survived by his wife; a daughter, Susan (Harry) Buist of Springfield, Mo.; a son, Steve; a granddaughter, Jessica Buist of Springfield; a brother, Ralph E. (Ellen) of Gallatin Gateway, Mont.; and a sister, Helga (Larry) Beard of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by his parents.

Trisagion service: 11 a.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, with special solo music beginning at 10:30 a.m. Burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and Evansdale AMVETS Post 31, assisted by the Iowa National Guard Honor Guard. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to St. Demetrios Church.
