SHIRLEY A. BERG, 76, of Cedar Falls, died Wednesday, February 21, 2007, at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo, Iowa.

She was born November 7, 1930 at Independence, Iowa, the daughter of William and Hazel (Hertzberg) Sherman. Shirley married Robert A. Berg August 20, 1960 at Independence, Iowa. He preceded her in death October 29, 2006.

She graduated from Jesup High School in 1948, and graduated from Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) in 1950 receiving a degree in Elementary Education with minors in Home Economics and Business Education. She worked as a statistician with the Waterloo, Cedar Falls & Northern Railroad. In 1957 Shirley began work with the American Cancer Society, Iowa Division, Inc. From 1957 until her retirement in 1992 as an Area Executive Director, she structured professional and public information educational programs, promoted service and rehabilitation programs, and organized countless fundraising projects.

Shirley and her husband Bob were longtime promoters for businesses on College Hill. She was a member of the Cedar Falls Woman’s Club, where she served in many capacities and was President from 1972-73. Shirley was also a member of the Tuesday Club, serving as President from 1968-69. She was a member of the PEO Sisterhood Chapter FV and served in many of the chapter’s offices. Shirley was also involved in a large number of community organizations, including Black Hawk County GIVS, Goodwill Industries of Northeast Iowa, Sartori Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, serving as President from 1993-94, Black Hawk Pharmacists Auxiliary, Cedar Falls Chamber of Commerce, Cedar Valley Breast Cancer Awareness Group, Elklets of Waterloo, Hearst Center for the Arts, Sartori Memorial Hospital Foundation Board, University of Northern Iowa Alumni Association, Waterloo/Cedar Falls Symphony Guild, Rosewood Estates Board of Directors and Heritage Club at Community National Bank.

Shirley was a loving and caring person. Though she did not have children of her own, she cared for those about her, whether they were a young person in the community or a an older person in need of an advocate. Shirley and Bob were able to travel the world together. They enjoyed summers in Door County, Wisconsin and winters at St. Petersburg Beach, Florida.

Survivors include a foster sister, A. Louise Peters, of Independence, Iowa, and a brother-in-law, Marshall Berg, of North Carolina.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Funeral services will be 10:30 am Monday, February 26, 2007, at First United Methodist Church, with interment at Fairview Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Visitation will be from 3:00—5:00 p.m. Sunday at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof funeral home and one hour before the service at the church. A memorial fund will be established.
