CEDAR FALLS - Harlan F. Timmerman, 87, of Cedar Falls, died Saturday, April 16, at Western Home Communities Elizabeth Martin Center of natural causes.

He was born Jan. 31, 1924, in Ryan, son of John Henry and Anna Mary Puggmiller Timmerman. He married Mary M. Stephens Sept. 23, 1947, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Waterloo. She died May 17, 2008.

He joined the U.S. Navy during World War II and served on the USS Westmorland, earning the rank of Petty Officer First Class (E6). Mr. Timmerman was honorably discharged in February of 1946. He worked for Carnation and Swiss Valley Farms for 30 years, retiring after the highway was built through downtown.

Survived by a son, Dennis (Kathy) of Massillon, Ohio; a grandson, Doug (Tina) Hoeppner; two great-grandsons, Brady and Ryan Hoeppner; three brothers, Allen of Apple Valley, Calif., Milo (Mary) of Delhi and Earl (Bernadine) of Freeport, Ill.; and a sister, Della (Bob) Ruppert of Iowa City.

Preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ann Pearson; two brothers, Alfred and Everett; and three sisters, Gladys, Elsie and Mary.

Memorial service: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Christ Lutheran Church, with burial in Garden of Memories. Public visitation will be held for an hour before services. Military Rites will be conducted by Becker-Chapman Post 138 American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Waterloo Post 1623. Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories is assisting the family.

He enjoyed woodworking, fishing and attending UNI games, mainly football and basketball. Harlan also loved his dogs. Harlan will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
