Gerald R. Herbener

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Gerald R. Herbener, 45, of San Bernardino, Calif., died on Dec. 18, 2004.

Military services/interment was at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, Calif.

He was born May 11, 1959, in Waterloo, Iowa, to Gerald E. and Jeannette (Fouste) Herbener Jr. He was known as "Rusty" when he attended Rockford Elementary. He served in the U.S. Air Force earning several commendations for excellence in jet mechanic work, then going on to McDonnell Douglas in Long Beach, Calif., for almost 20 years.

He loved the outdoors, mountains, skiing, creating inventions, and especially his family. He had a great sense of humor and was one of the good guys who will be missed by all.

Preceded in death by his father and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald E. Herbener Sr. of Mason City and Mr. and Mrs. Perry Fouste of Rockford.

Survived by his mother, Jeannette Fouste of Rudd, Iowa; and sisters, Kathy Esser, Kimberly West, of Mason City, Karen Herbener of Long Beach, Calif., and Kelly Nelson of Phoenix, Ariz.

He was also survived by his nieces and nephews, Jeff, Justin, Nicolas, Corey and Clifton; and great-nieces, Hannah and Celia. Also several aunts and cousins.

A letter excerpt from Russ on his Air Force graduation seemed to convey his spirit now: "...Thanks mom & dad for all the good & bad times of my life and be proud for now I'm happy, free..."
