Norma Hoelscher, 82, of La Porte City, died Thursday, April 7, 2011 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

She was born Feb. 23, 1929, in Reinbeck. She is the daughter of Fritz and Katie Linder and Emil Linder. She married Bernell V. Hoelscher on Sept. 14, 1968 in Waterloo. He preceded her in death on July 16, 1986.

Norma graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1950. She worked as a surgical nurse for Schoitz Hospital, Covenant Medical Center, and Dr. Lane Reeves, retiring in 2000.

Norma was member of the American Lutheran Church, La Porte City Garden Club, Tree's Forever, Cedar Valley Arboretum, Harmony House Greenhouse, Schoitz Retirees' Club, and was Queen of the La Porte City Red Hat Society.

Survived by two sons, James (Jennifer) Hoelscher of La Porte City, Steve (Joan) Hoelscher of Newton; one daughter, Jerriene (Al) Harper of Topeka, Kan.; three grandchildren, Nick (Jean) Harper of Topeka, Ryan Hoelscher of Buffalo, N.Y., Lisa (Jamie) St. John of Newton; four great-grandchildren, Lillie Harper, Zachary Hoelscher, Josie Swihart and Austin St. John; and three sisters, Marlyn Linder and Lin Johnson of Reinbeck, and Karen (Richard) Steele of Verona, Wis.

Preceded in death by her parents; her husband and one grandchild in infancy, Joy Hoelscher.

Services: will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at the American Lutheran Church with burial in the West View Cemetery both in La Porte City. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the American Lutheran Church (801 Monroe St.), and one hour before the service.

Norma was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and nurse. She spent her life selflessly caring for family, friends, and her community. It was easy to feel God's love through her, whether she was baking cookies for neighbors, picking out just the right flowers to plant along a street or holding a patient's hand as they went into surgery.

To Norma there was nothing better than family gatherings, serving in her church and spending time with her friends quilting, gardening and going out to eat.

Memorials May be directed to the American Lutheran Church, Cedar Valley Hospice or the La Porte City Garden Club.
