WATERLOO - John Kelly, 85, of Waterloo, died Friday, April 8 at his home.

He was born Aug. 11, 1925, in Waterloo, son of Joseph and Rita Burnham Kelly. He married Corine M. Holtkamp Aug. 28, 1954, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Williams.

He graduated from St. Mary's School in Waterloo and attended University of Northern Iowa for two years. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. Mr. Kelly worked for Illinois Central Railroad as a fireman and an engineer for 42 years, retiring in May of 1990. He was a member of the American Legion and Forty and Eight.

Survived by his wife; two sons, Tim (Susan) of Waterloo and Pat (Tina) of Fayetteville, N.C.; two daughters, Sue (Dr. Al) Van Engen of Sioux Center and Dr. Resa Kelly of San Jose, Calf.; seven grandchildren, Josh (Heather), Sean, Brian, and Johanna Kelly, Nick and Matt Van Engen; a great-grandchild, Owen Kelly; a brother, Eugene (Betty) Kelly of Fort Dodge; a sister, Marguerite (Kelly) Kyle of Fort Worth, Texas; and a brother-in-law, Verle Stucker of Iowa Falls.

Preceded in death by a sister, Marie Stucker.
