WATERLOO - Barbara Jane Short Hummel, 88, formerly of Waterloo and Independence, died Dec. 16, 2010, at The Forum at Tucson in Tucson, Ariz.

She was born May 18, 1922, in Buchanan County, daughter of Carl and Florence Clabby Short. She married Robert Hummel on May 24, 1971, in Reno, Nev.

Mrs. Hummel attended rural schools in Buchanan County and graduated from St. John's Catholic High School, Independence. She worked at Rath Packing Co. from 1941 to 1984. She and her husband retired to Tucson in 1985. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Waterloo and also at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, Tucson.

Survived by her husband; two sisters, Sally (Lester) Sevcik of Traer and Florence Gehling of Decorah; and nieces and nephews.

Services 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Benedict's Catholic Church, Decorah, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Waterloo. Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, Decorah, is in charge of arrangements.
