HOOFNAGLE, HOLLISTER, HARKEN, DERIFIELD

WATERLOO, IOWA - Dale Ralph Hoofnagle, 84, of rural Waukon, formerly of Waterloo, died at home Tuesday, March 22, 2011 of cancer.

He was born April 8, 1926, in Waterloo, son of Ralph L. and Minnie E. Hollister Hoofnagle. He married Laurene A. Harken on June 12, 1949, in Jesup. She died March 5, 1996. He later married Beulah "Bea" Derifield on September 28, 1996, in Selah, Wash.

Mr. Hoofnagle attended school in Waterloo, then served in the U.S. Navy, earning the Bronze Star. In 1947 he began a 42-year career as an electrician at Rath Packing Co., and after it closed, he worked at Tama Packing Co., retiring in 1992. He also owned and operated a small electrical business. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Waukon, the American Legion, VFW and AMVETS.

Survived by his wife; a son, Larry (Merry) of Lansing; a daughter, Marilyn Hoofnagle of Waterloo; a great-grandson, Sean; a brother, Wayne (Theresa) of Waterloo; 10 stepchildren, Cindy (John) Runnels, Jennifer (Joe) Miles and Margreet (Neil) Derifield, all of Texas, Laura Huff of Waterloo, Catherine Short, Jeff Derifield, Dick Ortiz and Lee Derifield, all of Washington state, Curtis and Jerry Derifield, both of California; 14 stepgrandchildren; 26 stepgreat-grandchildren; a stepgreat-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

During their 47 years of marriage, Dale and Laurene enjoyed fishing and hunting together and spending many hours on the Mississippi River.

Services 1 p.m. Saturday at Garden View Chapel Funeral Home, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Full military honors will be accorded by Becker-Chapman American Legion Post 138, Sullivan Brothers VFW Post 1623 and the Iowa Army National Guard Honors Detail. Visitation from 11:30 a.m. until services Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorial service Sunday, April 10, following worship services at First Presbyterian Church, Waukon.

Memorials may be directed to pancreatic cancer research at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.

Dale was preceded in death by a son; Scott Laverne was stillborn at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, on Nov. 21, 1965.
