WATERLOO — Donna Jean Hayes, 78, of Waterloo, died Sunday, March 20, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home of cancer.

She was born Aug. 21, 1932, in Ottumwa, daughter of Floyd and Evelyna Sutton Cox. She married Glen Smith in 1950, and they later divorced. She later married Gerald Hayes, and they divorced.

Ms. Hayes graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1950 and from Hawkeye Institute of Technology. She was a machine operator and retired from GMT, Waverly. Following retirement, she worked with her son, Mike Smith, and her grandson, Tim Webber, in the family car business. She was a member of Faith Assembly of God Church, Elk Run Heights.

Survived by two daughters, Diane Schmit of Waterloo and Judy Smith of Fort Dodge; two sons, Michael (Kathy) Smith of Waterloo and Timothy Smith of Waverly; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Florence (Wayne) Jacobs of Waterloo; and a brother, Floyd "Son" (JoAnne) Cox of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by two brothers, Edwin "Bud" and James "Jimmy" Cox.

Donna loved bicycling and motorcycling. She enjoyed fishing, playing cards and driving her convertibles. Family was of the highest importance to Donna, and she was happiest when she was with them. She was a hard worker who ignored the obstacles placed in her life.

Memorial services 11 a.m. Wednesday at Faith Assembly of God Church, Elk Run Heights, preceded by an hour of visitation. Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, assisted the family.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice in her name.
