WATERLOO — Wayne A. Smith, of Waterloo, died Saturday, March 5, at Allen Hospital of congestive heart failure.

He was born in Alburnett, son of George and Gertrude Smith. He married Marilyn Kreutzer, and they later divorced. He married Joan Hines on May 17, 1975.

Mr. Smith attended Alburnett High School and was employed as a salesman for Walnut Dairy, later Oxford Chemical, retiring in 1990. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving during World War II. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and Waterloo VFW Post 1623, and he volunteered at Allen Hospital in the cardiac department.

Survived by his wife; four daughters, Kimberly (Kent) Cromer of Marion, Lora Michels of Cedar Falls, Julie (Jeff) Turner of Dysart and Kari Torkelson of Springfield, Mo.; a son, Alan of Hiawatha; 10 grandchildren, Wayne, Diane, D.J., David, Brandon, Jennifer, Jordan, Alex, Justin and Ben; a great-grandson, Robert; two brothers, Pete (Florence) of Olin and Ardith (Carol) of Alburnett; and a sister, Hilda Martin of Alburnett.

Preceded in death by two sisters, Norma and an infant; and five brothers, Faye, Don, Aubrey, Lowell and Cledeth.

Memorial services: 11 a.m. Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church, with military rites by Waterloo VFW Post 1623 and American Legion Post 138. Visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Locke Funeral Home. His body has been cremated.

Memorials may be directed to World War II Honor Flight or to the church.
