EVANSDALE - John Albert "Tex" Hollaway, 85, formerly of Evansdale, died Friday, March 4, at Cedar Falls Lutheran Home, Cedar Falls, from Alzheimer's disease.

He was born April 20, 1925, in Electra, Texas, son of William and Ida Jane Frasier Hollaway. He married Betty Marie Boyd on June 25, 1948, in Fayetteville, Ark.

Mr. Hollaway served in the U.S. Army with the 183rd Field Artillery Battalion. He was awarded five bronze stars for his involvement in five major battles including the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France. He was employed at John Deere Waterloo Works for 40 years, retiring in 1988, and was a member of UAW Local 838. He was a member of AMVETS and of St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Evansdale.

Survived by his wife; six sons, Gregory, Jeffrey B., Patrick (Jamie) and Jeffrey R. Hollaway, all of Evansdale, Eric (Tiffany) Hollaway of Waterloo and Zach McCauley of Ames; two daughters, Margaret (Russell) Robertson of Tulsa, Okla., and Jan (Thomas) Moffett of Rewey, Wis.; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and thee sisters, Dovie McFadden and Mary (Joe) Hardin, both of Springdale, Ark., and Billy Kay (Leon) Morgan of Elkins, Ark.

Preceded in death by two sons, Jerry and Adam; five brothers, George, Charlie, Melvin, Thomas and Bill; and three sisters, Opal Markum, Eva Mae Sutton and Frances Hinds.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mark United Methodist Church, Evansdale, with burial in Waterloo Cemetery, Waterloo. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, Waterloo. Military honors by Iowa National Guard, Evansdale AMVETS Post 31 and Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 Honor Guards.

John and Betty were foster parents for 90 children over the course of 43 years. He enjoyed fishing and hunting in his spare time and was an avid bowler.
