SAGE, STEELY, OLMSTED, MORGAN, JOHNS

Harlan Russell Sage of Madison, Wis., died March 4, 2011, at Oakwood Village. He was born on April 17, 1924, on a farm in Bennington Township, Black Hawk County, to Russell H. Sage and Hazel P. Steely Sage.

Harlan attended a one-room rural elementary school in Bennington Township and graduated from Dunkerton High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and attended Oklahoma A&M in electrical engineering. On Aug. 15, 1943, he married Marlys M. Speer at Mount Hope United Methodist Church. While in the Navy, he was instrumental in the development of long-range radar at research facilities in Washington, D.C. After being honorably discharged, he took up farming and wiring farms for rural electrification. He then owned and operated Dunkerton Appliance. Most of his 20-plus years with Burrough's Corp. was as service manager in various cities in the Midwest starting with the original computer installation at John Deere, Waterloo.

Harlan was very proud of his family. He enjoyed woodworking, antiquing, remodeling and wiring projects, farming, fishing, politics and football. He was very active in the United Methodist Church throughout his life and was a member of Peter Cress Legion Post in Dunkerton.

Harlan is survived by his wife of 67 years, Marlys; son-in-law, Bill Olmsted of Mountmellick, Ireland; children, Brian (Jane) of Angle Inlet, Minn., Greg (Judie) of Nelson, Wis., Sharon (Colin) of Madison, Wis., Joel (Mary Beth) of Dover, Ark., and Kim (Dan) Bemis of Monroeville, Ohio; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Becky Olmsted; and sisters, Irene (Paul) Morgan and Mary (Charles) Johns.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 12, at Mount Hope United Methodist Church, 2003 Mount Vernon Road, Waterloo. Private family burial and military rites will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Dunkerton, prior to the services.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to HospiceCare Inc., Madison, Wis., Habitat for Humanity or Heifer International.
