Eugene H. "Gene" Moon, 86, of Waterloo, died Thursday, Feb. 17, at Ravenwood Nursing & Rehab Center.

Gene was born in Los Angeles on Dec. 14, 1924, son of Sarah Hubbard and Harry Moon. Gene graduated from Cedar Falls High School, and was accepted into the Army Air force as a cadet. He graduated as a 2nd lieutenant and was transferred to Texas as a flight instructor. He then became a 1st lieutenant. Gene also served in the National Guard while in high school.

After World War II, Gene married Bernita Smith at St. John's Catholic Church in Independence, Iowa. They have three children; two daughters, Debra (John) Prutch of Pall, Ill., and Jeanne (Dick) Schmit of Clive, Iowa; one son, Douglas Moon of Waterloo; 10 grandchildren; Samantha, Joshua (Aubrey) and Alexa Prutch, Joe (Kirsten) Schmit, Katherine (Chris) Seiberling, Scott and Brian Schmit, Meagan (Adam) Feltes, Emily (Jason) South and Michael Moon; six great-grandchildren; Colin, Ryan and Madeline Schmit, Ada Seiberling, Harper and Eisley Prutch.

Gene worked in real estate and retired as a foreman from Waterloo Steel. He was a life member of the Waterloo Amvets Post 19, American Legion and the VFW. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church for 54 years. Gene was instrumental in selecting the site for Columbus High School and St. Francis Hospital, now Covenant Medical Center, with the then Archbishop Binz of Dubuque and Msgr Duane Brady of Waterloo.

Gene is survived by his wife and children; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Mary Stewart of Florida, Opal Smith of Independence and Loretta Smith of Oelwein.

He was preceded in death by two grandsons, Matthew and Jacob; seven brothers-in-law, Phillip, William "Bud", Lawrence, Harold, Hubert and James Smith and Bob Stewart; three sisters-in-law, Lavonne, Marlene and Sue Smith.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Public visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and a 6 p.m. vigil. Visitation also for an hour before services at the church. Full military rites will be conducted by the Waterloo Amvets Post 19, Evansdale Amvets Post 31 and the National Guard Honor Guard.

Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Cedar Valley Hospice.
