LA PORTE CITY — Herbert J. Bagenstos, 81, of La Porte City, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, at La Porte City Nursing and Rehab Center.

He was born Feb. 27, 1929, in La Porte City, son of Arthur "Bud" and Ella Bohrnsen Bagenstos. He married Shirley A. Trewin on Oct. 6, 1951, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, La Porte City.

Mr. Bagenstos graduated from La Porte City High School, then began his career of nearly 50 years working in his family-owned business, Bagenstos Sand and Gravel in La Porte City, retiring in 1996. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War and was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, San Diego American Legion Post 207 and a former member of the La Porte City Country Club and the Waterloo Elks Club.

Survived by: his wife; two daughters, Diane (Allan) Slade of Waterloo and Leann (Gary) Martens of Marion, Ind.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Gloria (Ralph) Dunkelberger of La Porte City and Kay (Rudy) Ramirez of Simi Valley, Calif.

Memorial services: 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul United Methodist Church, La Porte City, where visitation begins at 9 a.m. La Porte City Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials: may be directed to La Porte City Nursing and Rehab Center, 1100 Highway 218 N., La Porte City 50651; St. Paul United Methodist Church, 1 Sycamore St., La Porte City 50651; or the family, in lieu of the flowers.
