LA PORTE CITY — Dorothy M. Hillman Rathe, 93, of La Porte City, died Sunday, Jan. 30, at Ravenwood Nursing and Rehab Center, Waterloo.

She was born Jan. 13, 1918, in Shell Rock, daughter of LaVern and Edna Hanner Hillman, and was raised by her mother and stepfather, John Bolton. She married Harry F. Rathe on Oct. 18, 1938, in Waverly. He died in 1991.

Mrs. Rathe graduated from Shell Rock High School in 1935. She delivered papers for the Waterloo Courier in the 1930s and worked in various restaurants and the fashion department at Sears. She sold Avon and also owned and operated a restaurant in Tripoli. She was a member of the VFW Post 3983 Auxiliary in La Porte City and the American Lutheran Church.

Survived by two sons, Bill (Elaine) of Le Sueur, Minn., and Dan (Lori) of New Hartford; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Barbara (Bob) Sammann of Anderson, Mo.; and a brother, Richard Bolton of East Dubuque, Ill.

Preceded in death by two sisters, Katherine Nelson and June Olsovsky; four brothers, Earl Hillman and Donald, Ronald and Darrell Bolton; and a granddaughter, Amy Rathe.

Services at 10:30 a.m. Friday at American Lutheran Church, La Porte City, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery, Waterloo. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at La Porte City Funeral Service and for an hour before services Friday at the church.

Dorothy was active in her retirement years, winning two governor's awards for volunteerism. She enjoyed working in Lutheran volunteer service activities, sewing and crocheting blankets and garments for the needy in our homeland and overseas and assisting with other church activities. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
