DEATH SUMMONS GEO. MENGEL, SR. LAST SATURDAY
HAD SUFFERED HEART ATTACK TWO WEEKS BEFORE; SERVICES TUESDAY

Death’s final summons came to George Mengel, Sr., well known farmer of this community, Saturday morning, April 9th, at 5:30 o’clock at his farm home five miles northwest of La Porte, City. He was 84 years old at the time of his passing.

His death resulted from the natural causes of old age complicated by a heart attack two weeks earlier which confined him to bed.

Born May 24, 1865, at Berghaffen, Germany, George Andrew Mengel was the son of Henry and Margaret Mengel. He spent his early years in Germany and in the year 1881 came with his parents to the United States and settled at Dysart.

On February 16, 1887, he was married to Elizabeth Ballheim in Vinton and he had since lived on farms in the Dysart and La Porte City vicinities. Twenty nine years ago the family moved from Benton County to the home northwest of town, where his death occurred.

Left to mourn his passing are his wife; three sons, Henry; Archie; and George, Jr., at home on the farm; two daughters, Mrs. Anna Dunkelberger of Vinton and Mrs. Alvin Dunkelberger of La Porte City; 12 grandchildren, George, Loren, Archie, Ralph and Elizabeth Dunkelberger; Mrs. Vera Hines and Mrs. Glenn Koepke, all of La Porte City. Mrs. George Montgomery, Ila and Thelma Dunkelberger of Vinton, Mrs. Donald Hackett of Cedar Falls and Mrs. Duane Felier of Oarrison and four great grandchildren.

Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Jacob Klar of La Porte City; Mrs. George Bunz Sr., of Dysart; and Mrs. George Kolbe, of Dixon, S. Dakota.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Katie, one brother and four sisters.

The Mengels had celebrated their 50th and 60th wedding anniversaries and this year had passed their 62nd year of married life.

SERVICES HELD

Funeral services were held at the Evangelical United Brethren church Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock following prayer services at 1:30 AT THE FARM HOME. Rev. W. D. Winter, pastor of the Evangelical United Brethren church at Dumont, conducted the services with the assistance of Rev. M. E. shank, pastor of the local church.
Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Burr accompanied by Mrs. Jerold Fardal, sang “Rock of Ages” and “In the Garden”.
Six nephews of the deceased who served as casket bearers were George Klar, Elmer Klar and Henry Thede of La Porte City; George Kempf of Riceville; Jerry Bunz of Dysart; and William Runyan of Waterloo.
Burial was made in West View Cemetery.
