WATERLOO — Merle B. Cox, 85, of Waterloo, died at home Tuesday, Jan. 4, of natural causes.

He was born Feb. 9, 1925, on the family farm, Oneida Township, Delaware County, son of George and Letha Hutson Cox. He married Helen Heiserman in 1946. They later divorced. He married Mary Schwart Aug. 22, 1964. She died March 6, 1980. He married Opal Miller July 13, 1981. She died Dec. 30, 2007.

Mr. Cox graduated from Oneida High School in 1933. He farmed with his father until drafted into the U.S. Navy in 1943. He was discharged in 1946, drafted again into the Navy during the Korean War and served from 1951-52. He was a machinist for Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids, retiring in 1981. He was a member of Jesup American Legion and Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Evansdale. In retirement, he ran a ceramic shop in Marion and Jesup with his wife, Opal.

Survived by: two sons, Allen (Barb) of Anamosa and Duane (Terri) of Marion; three daughters, Denise (Bob) Johnson of Omaha, Rose (Duane) Candler of Vinton and Kathy (Charlie) Wrestler of Wichita, Kan.; two stepchildren; 19 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Francis (Jeanne) of Manchester; a sister, Lois Culbertson of Sherrill; and a sister-in-law, Jean Cox of California.

Preceded in death by: his parents; two brothers, Milner and Gordon; a sister, Phyllis Hakanson; and a granddaughter, Michelle Lynn.

Memorial services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Evansdale, with burial at a later date in Cedar Memorial Cemetery. Military honors provided by United States Navy Honor Guard. Public visitation for an hour before services Saturday at the church. Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, is in charge of arrangements.

Merle loved working with cars — especially painting them. He spent many of his early years racing cars on country back roads. He also enjoyed fishing and boating
