Mary Elizabeth (Potter) Spencer 1934-2009

WATERLOO - Mary Elizabeth Spencer, 75, of 216 Oliver St., died Tuesday, Sept. 15, at home of natural causes.

She was born May 27, 1934, in Waterloo, daughter of Robert George Potter and Grace Beatrice Harris. She married Frank Spencer Sr. on June 7, 1952, in Waterloo. They later divorced.

She was formerly employed with the Waterloo Public Schools as an educator.

Survived by: her ex-husband and they remain lifelong friends; four daughters, Joleen Spencer Oladeinde (Emmanuel) of Chicago, Diana Bryant and Francine (Richard) Thompson, both of Coralville, and Claudia (Ricky) Robinson of Waterloo; a son, Frank Jr. of Waterloo; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lorraine Griffie of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by: her parents; and two brothers, Alonzo Potter and Melvin Potter.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday at Payne Memorial AME Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Public visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Sanders Funeral Service, and for an hour before services Saturday at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to the family at 216 Oliver St., where they will receive friends.
