WATERLOO - Melvin L. "Shorty" Holmes, 82 of Waterloo, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, at Allen Memorial Hospital of complications of surgery.

He was born April 9, 1916, in Plainfield, son of Frank David and Hattie Susie Potter Holmes. He married Alice I. Remley on May 30, 1940, in Plainfield.

Mr. Holmes served in the U.S. Army during World War II, was employed by J. Roach and Sons, Plainfield, for many years and was maintenance supervisor at Goodwill Industries in Waterloo, retiring in 1981.

Survived by: his wife, Alice; two sons, Leonard of Lakewood, Ohio, and Richard of Sumter, S.C.; two daughters, Janice Holmes of Waterloo and Mary Severs of Clarksville; six grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; two great-grandsons; and a stepgreat-grandson.

Preceded in death by: a grandson; five brothers, Earl, Legrand, Clio, Owen and Carlton; and four sisters, Velner Brockway, Leah McIntosh, Ethel Holmes and Florence Lauzon.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, with committal services at 2 p.m. Monday in Willow Lawn Cemetery, Plainfield. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Waverly American Legion Post 176. Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Parrott & Wood Family Funeral Care, and for an hour before services Monday at the church.
