Helen M. Christensen, age 94, formerly of Waterloo and Hampton, and more recently of Cherokee, passed away Friday, Dec. 10, 2010, at the Cherokee Villa in Cherokee.

Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. today, Dec. 14, at Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee. Elder Henry Epperson will officiate. Burial will take place at 3 p.m. today at Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.greenwoodfuneral.com .

Helen was born in 1916 to William H. and Frances (Early) Wood in Dumont. She graduated from high school in 1935 in Waterloo and worked for Hinson Manufacturing.

On Oct. 1, 1939, Helen married Gordon Christensen and they moved to Hampton, where their three children, David, Susan and Gregg, were born. While in Hampton, Helen was an active member of Mother's Club and the hospital auxiliary.

Helen was raised in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. After returning to Waterloo she served her Lord teaching Sunday school, Bible school, being an active member of the women's department and volunteering for community organizations such as the Gophers and Gopherettes, the Food Bank and others.

Helen is survived by her daughter, Susan Paulsen and her husband Darrel of Cherokee; granddaughters, Jennifer Gaydo and her husband Tim of Cherokee, Traci Paulsen and her husband Joe D'Souza of Davenport and Nicole Schuett and her husband Michael of Wauconda, Ill.; one daughter-in-law, Beth Auld and her daughter Sharon Christensen of Newport News, Va.; two grandsons, Travis Stone of Waterloo and Matthew Christensen; a granddaughter, Cindy Christensen; and great-grandchildren, Kyle Sump, Kody Sump, Bailey Gaydo, Eleanor Schuett, Emma Schuett and Ethan Christensen.

Preceding her in death were her husband in 1993, her son David in 2008, her son Gregg in 2010, her parents, her brothers and sisters and an infant grandchild.

Helen was a gracious, quiet lady who taught by example. As she joins her Heavenly Father she will be missed by her earthly family and friends.
