WATERLOO, IOWA - Woodrow Smith Sr., 77, 438 Lane St., died Friday, Dec. 3, at Allen Hospital of natural causes.

He was born Jan. 26, 1933, in Durant, Miss., son of Eddie Smith Sr. and Alice Downer. He married Lora Lee Hollingsworth on March 30, 1956. She died Nov. 24, 1985. He married Jessie Davis, and they later divorced. He married Joann Striverson on Sept. 27, 1997, in Waterloo.

Mr. Smith was formerly employed at John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works for 30 years and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survived by: his wife; two daughters, the Rev. Shirley Smith Burt and Cynthia Balark, both of Waterloo; four stepdaughters, Debra McCree, Yvonne Speller and Willie M. Monroe (Marvin), all of Waterloo, and Karen Moore of Carbondale, Ill.; a son, Woodrow Jr. (Beatrice) of Fort Worth, Texas; seven stepsons, Daniel Adams, Herbert (Anita) Speller Jr., William (Deidra) Speller, Wendell (Carolyn) Speller and Delbert Speller, all of Waterloo, Ronald Speller of Denver, Colo., and Darryl (June) Speller of Atlanta; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Viola Cowley of Irving, Texas, and Lela Leflore (Kermit) of Chicago; and two brothers, Eddie Smith Jr. of Lexington, Miss., and James C. Smith of St. Louis.

Preceded in death by: an infant daughter, Alma Jean Smith; a son, James Warren; a brother, the Rev. John T. Smith; and two sisters, Causie Hennings and Connie Belle Wright Garnet.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday at Union Missionary Baptist Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted at the church by American Legion Post 138 and VFW Post 1623. Public visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. today and for an hour before services Friday, all at the church. Sanders Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
