Ethel Ebel Scott, 88, died Monday, Nov. 22, in Waterloo following a long illness. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Robert G. Scott; by brothers, Stanley T. Ebel of Newport, Ore., and Marvin E. Ebel of Nathrop, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Emily Mussett Ebel; by a sister, Louise (Sr. M. Ethelreda); and by brothers, Robert L. Ebel, A. James Ebel and August A. Ebel.

She was born March 28, 1922, in Waterloo, and married Robert Scott on June 19, 1948.

She graduated from Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI) in 1944, and began a life-long career in education, first at Calmar, and beginning in 1947, at West High School in Waterloo. She received the M.A. degree from the University of Iowa in 1952. Her responsibilities at West High included teaching Home Economics, working with special education students, and subsequently, as a guidance counselor. Her interest in current and former students, both as an active teacher and after her retirement in 1984, was a central focus of her life.

After retirement she served as president of the Black Hawk County Retired School Personnel, as well as State Historian of Retired School Personnel. She was adviser, counselor and friend to members of her family, especially her many nieces and nephews.

Ethel was a member and former Deacon of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, where for many years she supervised the kitchen and was a member of the regular women's sewing group. Other interests included cooking, gardening, following her favorite athletic teams, and especially fishing.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 10, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery; visitation 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, at Locke Funeral Home. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church.
