Daughter Survive

CEDAR FALLS—James McCreary, rejected 70 years ago for service in the union army because he was regarded by examining physicians as too frail for the rigors of military life died here Thursday morning at the age of 102 years and five months. He outlived all the men of his acquaintance who were accepted for enlistment, besides his own generation and many of the next.

Examining physicians told him he had tuberculosis, but later it was decided he was suffering from a kidney ailment. His apparent affliction did not handicap him in his private life, for he spent many years as farmer, retiring in 1882.

Mr McCreary was born July 11 1830, in Guernsey County. Ohio, and in 1852 married in that county Miss Harriet Talbert. She died in 1910

The couple came west to Hancock county, Illinois, in 1854 and to Wayne County. Iowa, in 1868. In 1886. they went to Palo Alto County to reside.

After the death of his wife, Mr. McCreary made his home with a daughter, Mrs. Lovina Whitmer, in Curlew, Iowa, until she died in 1923, when he moved to Waterloo to reside with his son, A. M. McCreary, who now lives at 2017 Olive Street, Cedar Falls, where Mr. McCreary's death occurred.

Surviving are the son here, three other sons and a daughter: D. W. McCreary, West Bend, Iowa; Hugh McCreary, Perry, Iowa, Mrs. L. B. Ridrick, Texahoma, Oklahoma, and R. J. McCreary, Malta, Montana. There are 25 grandchildren surviving. Five of Mr. McCreary's grandsons served in the world war.

Death resulted from general breakdown. He had been seriously ill but two weeks.

The body is at Peterson's Funeral Home in Waterloo.

Mr. McCreary was a quiet, home loving man. He never appeared to be rugged but lived to be 102 years, 5 months and 10 days old. He had a bright, active mind and loved to talk about the events of the day. He never missed going to the polls to cast his vote. He was a staunch Republican all his life but this year he voted the Democratic ticket. He had the experience of seeing 20 different presidential campaigns waged on political issues varying from slavery and tariff to prohibition. He tried to enlist during the Civil war but was refused because of not being able to pass the physical examination. He, however, lived to see most of the Civil war vets buried. The McCreary family lived in this vicinity for a number of years. They were always the best of citizens. The deceased was well liked by all who knew him.
