CEDAR FALLS, IOWA — LaVern J. Power, 89, of Cedar Falls, died Saturday, Nov. 20, at Cedar Falls Health Care Center.

He was born May 2, 1921, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Ernest Leroy and Nellie Mabel Grapes Power. He married Maxine Mae Jindrich on Nov. 7, 1948, in Waterloo. She died May 28, 2000.

Mr. Power graduated from Waterloo East High School, served in the U.S. Army during World War II and retired as captain with the Waterloo Police Department in 1977. He was past commander of Becker Chapman American Legion Post 138 in Waterloo and was president of Iowa Association of Chiefs of Police and Peace Officers in 1977.

Survived by: three sons, Daniel J. (Carol) of Cedar Falls, Mark L. (Debra) of Ames and Timothy C. (Angela) of St. Louis; and seven grandchildren, Alexander, Benjamin and Gregory Power, Jenna and Connor Power and Ashley and Brice Power.

Preceded in death by: his parents; five brothers, Edgar, Ronald, Woodrow, Donald and Harold; and four sisters, Melba Royer, Thelma Mitchell, Gleneva Power, and Betty Vaughn.

Services: 9 a.m. Wednesday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, with burial at 2 p.m. in Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Van Meter. There will be no visitation.
