STEFFEN, DETHLEFS, VENABLES, ROSE

LA PORTE CITY - Thomas L. "Tom" Steffen, 59, of La Porte City, died at home Sunday, Nov. 7, of cancer.

He was born Feb. 17, 1951, in Waterloo, son of Leo and Elsie Dethlefs Steffen. He married Donna Jean Venables on June 2, 2000, in Oelwein.

Mr. Steffen graduated from La Porte City High School in 1969, then attended NIACC in Mason City for two years. He worked as a machinist at John Deere for 31 years, retiring in 2010.

Survived by: his wife; three sons, Mark Steffen of Cedar Falls, Chad (Kate) Steffen of Des Moines and Ben Snyder of Holland; a stepson, Rob Venables of Shellsburg, two stepdaughters, Cynthia Venables of La Porte City and Jessica (Kurt) Venables-Jesse of Marion; seven grandchildren, Lindsay, Kimberly, Madyson, Gavin, Kade, Tyler and Drew; a brother, James (Sheri) of La Porte City; and a sister, Kay (James) Rose of Arlington.

Preceded in death by: his parents.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in West View Cemetery, both in La Porte City. Public visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at La Porte City Funeral Service, with a 5 p.m. Scripture service. Visitation also for an hour before services Wednesday at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to the church at 1021 Poplar St., La Porte City 50651.

Tom enjoyed spending time with family and friends, fishing, golfing, yard work, cooking and trips to the casino.
