Charles J. Shirley of Charlotte, formerly of Waterloo, went to the arms of his Lord and Maker on his 63rd birthday, Saturday morning, Oct. 2, 2010, following a long, courageous battle with cancer.

Charles Jackson Shirley was born Oct. 2, 1947, in Waterloo, to Charles Oscar and Gene (Clark) Shirley. Following graduation from Waterloo East High School, he entered the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. Chuck was united in marriage to Tammy Sue Ketelsen on April 30, 1988. Together they raised five children. He had been employed by River Cities Industries, Eldridge. Tammy preceded Chuck in death on Dec. 16, 2005.

He was a man who could fix anything, a jack of all trades. He was an outdoorsman, loved to garden and mow and enjoyed fishing.

Surviving are children, Alicia Ann (Jason) Held of Davenport, Robert David (Maria) Shirley of El Paso, Texas, Matthew Charles Shirley, Brittni Jo (Jessey) Smith and Lindsey Elizabeth Shirley, all of Charlotte, Terra Ann (David) Cleveland of Indianola and Mark Anthony Shirley of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Hannah Schreiber, Jasmine Held, Emily Shirley and Maxwell, Langley and Brinley Cleveland; sisters, Charlene (Jesse) Gilbreath of Foley, Ala., and Linda (Al) Niedert, Mary Morris and Janet (Craig) McAhren, all of Waterloo; a brother, Tim (JoAnn) Shirley of Chanute, Kan.; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ron and Betty Ketelsen of Clinton.

Preceding Chuck in death in addition to his wife were his parents; a son, Charles Ryan; and two brothers, Eugene and David.

Family and friends may visit at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, in the funeral home chapel. Military rites will follow.

Pallbearers will be Al Niedert, Adam Assenmacher, Travis Ketelsen, Tory Ketelsen, Allen Ketelsen, Dennis Gisel, Tom Torode and Seth Blanchard.
