WATERLOO - Richard Summerhays, 77, of Harper's Ferry, formerly of Waterloo, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, at Veterans Memorial Hospital, Waukon.

He was born Oct. 31, 1932, in Waterloo, son of Donald and Marian Betz Summerhays. He married Carol Jessie Davis on June 14, 1960, in Waterloo. They later divorced. He married Shelly Punelli on Jan. 25, 1985, in Des Moines.

He graduated from Orange High School in 1950 and attended Iowa State University. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1950-1954, receiving the National Defense, China Service, Korean Service and the United Nations awards. Mr. Summerhays was owner of Midwest Pattern Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1993. He was a member of the American Legion in Harper's Ferry and the Elks Club in Destin, Fla. He also was a former member of the Knights of Columbus in Waterloo.

Survived by: his wife; six sons, Dan (Linda) and Sam (Karla), both of Waterloo, Todd of Anchorage, Alaska, Eric (Barb) of Reedsburg, Wis., Tony (Jane) Punelli of Des Moines and Dominic (Kelli) Punelli of Waterloo; a daughter, Christina (Jacob) Lederman of Des Moines; 17 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Tom of Waterloo and David (Marilyn) of Anchorage; and two sisters, Donna (Don) Griffin of Waterloo and Valeria "Tootie" Feller of Redding, Calif.

Preceded in death by: two brothers, Jerry and Joseph Summerhays; a sister, Jackie Boderman; and his mother-in-law, Betty Murphy.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Edward Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hagarty–Waychoff–Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, with a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil. Full military rights conducted by American Legion Post 138 and VFW Post 1623. Visitation also for an hour before services Saturday at the church.
