MAN , 85, DIES OF GAS FUMES, A SUICIDE

Funeral arrangements were being planned Tuesday for Frank Mahanna, 85, of 1319 Bluff Street, who authorities said took his own life Monday afternoon.

Deputy Coroner Dr. Paul O’Keefe said Mahanna commited suicide by turning on a gas burner in a small room at his son’s home.

Dr. O’Keefe said Mahanna placed a blanket around the door to the room to prevent the gas from escaping.

A fire department inhalator squad was called but Mahanna was dead upon their arrival.

He was born March 31, 1865, at Iowa City, the son of John and Mary Mahanna and was married to Anna Stuke at Topeka, Kansas in April 1888.

He had lived in Black Hawk County 42 years, coming here from Denver, Colorado, where he worked as an engineer.

Surviving are three sons, James, 1319 Bluff Street; Frank, Madison, Wisconsin; and Leslie, address unknown; three daughters, Mrs. Bert Ohl, Oelwein, Ia.; Mrs. William Neigh, Evansdale; Mrs. Robert Wilson, Cudahy, Wis., and M. Fred Pella, Burlington, Wis.
There are 23 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
