WATERLOO - Donald L. Aswegan, 85, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home of cancer.

He was born March 14, 1925, in Grundy County, son of John D. and Reka F. Hippen Aswegan. He married LaVonne Krull on Jan. 7, 1950, near Bristow. She died June 1, 1995.

He joined the U.S. Army in 1943 during World War II. He and his company invaded Utah Beach. He was employed as a machinist at John Deere until his retirement on July 31, 1985.

Survived by: a son, Ron (Susan) of Waverly; three daughters, Sandy (Dave) Wagenknecht of Oelwein, Lori Aswegan of Waterloo and Joan (Dirk) Hamilton of Jesup; seven grandchildren; five great-grandsons; and a sister, Gertrude Holmes of West Burlington.

Preceded in death by: a daughter, Deborah Aswegan; and a brother, Herman Aswegan.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the chapel, and for an hour before services Saturday at the chapel. Military rites will be conducted by Becker-Chapman Post 138 American Legion and Waterloo Post 1623 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Memorials: may be directed to the family.

Donald was a very proud veteran and fond of his model trains. He enjoyed fishing and flowers and had a handmade pond in back of his home. Donald loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Donald will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
