GILBERTVILLE — Vernon C. Wermerskirchen, 93, of Gilbertville, died Monday, July 19, at Manor Care Health Services, Waterloo, after a long illness.

He was born Feb. 22, 1917, in Hokah, Minn., son of Joseph Wermerskirchen and Sophie Hefner Wermerskirchen. He married Mildred Anna Reuter Nov. 26, 1946, in Raymond. She died June 6, 2010.

He graduated from high school in Minnesota and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Wermerskirchen was the owner of Vern’s Plumbing in Gilbertville and worked for Youngblut Construction. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Nugent-Demuth American Legion Post 714, and served 40-plus years on the Gilbertville Volunteer Fire Department.

Survived by: two sons, Mark (Mona) and Rick (Carol) of Waterloo; six daughters, Janice (John) Brustkern of Evansdale, Carol (Paul) Tope of Center Point, Connie (Dave) Francis of Cedar Falls, Paula Wermerskirchen of Waterloo, Norma (John) Hinding of Austin, Texas, and Donna (Ron) Jojola of Albuquerque, N.M.; a sister, Marjorie Youngblut of Washburn; 20 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren,

Preceded in death by: his wife, a son, Robert; a daughter, Doris Kelsey; a grandson, Christopher Tope; and a brother, Norbert.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with burial at a later date in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, both in Gilbertville. Military rites conducted by Nugent-Demuth American Legion Post 714 of Gilbertville. Public visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at White Funeral Home, Jesup, with a 7 p.m. vigil service, and also for an hour before services Thursday at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to Nugent-Demuth American Legion Post 714, Gilbertville Volunteer Fire Department, or to other charities.

He was a loving husband to his wife "Millie" for over 63 years and enjoyed spending time at the cabin, fishing and his dogs.
