CEDAR FALLS - Anton "Tony" Lund, 91 of Western Home Communities, died Friday, July 09, 2010 at the Elizabeth E Martin Center.

He was born Oct. 4, 1918 in Wessington, S.D., son of Andrew & Christina Lund. In 1934, the family moved to Vancouver, Wash., where he graduated high school. He received both a BA and Master Degree from Iowa State Teachers College. He married Vivian Herwig on July 26, 1941 in Papillion, Neb. He taught music in Denmark and Seymour, Iowa before becoming a member of the U.S. Army Air Force Band in 1942 serving our country in World War II until late 1945. He then opened a music store in Boone, Iowa before returning to teaching in Rolfe, Iowa in 1947. In 1952, he became instrumental music instructor, band director and head of the Cedar Falls public school music department, retiring in 1981. He was a past president of the local chapter of Ph Mu Alpha, National Honorary Music Fraternity. He was also a member of the NEA, the ISEA, and the CFEA where he served as president. He was voted into the prestigious National American School Band Directors Association and he also was a member of the Iowa Bandmasters Association where he served as president of the Northeast District. As historian for this state organization, he authored a booklet detailing the history of the organization and their successful promotion of the "Iowa Band Law" that enables a municipality to levy a tax to support community bands. He was a long time member of the Cedar Falls Municipal Band, served as associate and finally director of the band for eight years. He served on the Session of the First Presbyterian Church, directed the choir for 16 years and was song leader of the Cedar Falls Kiwanis Club for several years.

Survived by: a son, David (Marcia) of Des Moines; three daughters, Sheryl (Ron) Barnes of Bloomington, Ind., Susan (David) Prescott of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Judy (Bob) Larkin of Cedar Falls; eight grandchildren, Suzanne (David) Meyer, Scott Barnes, David Prescott, Angela (Travis) Kanaly, Andy Lund, Daniel Lund, Brian Larkin, Christi Larkin and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Vivian on Dec. 24, 2009, his parents, three sisters and two brothers.

Services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church with inurnment later in Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Military honors will be conducted by the Cedar Falls AMVETS Post #49. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Richardson Funeral Home, and for one hour before services Tuesday at the church.
