On Sunday, April 18, 2010, after a prolonged illness, Major Rose Marie (Hoppes) Cedervall went to be with the Lord, surrounded by family members.

Rose was born in Waterloo on March 25, 1946, to David E. and Rose E. Hoppes. As a young person, she lived in Cedar Falls with her family. She was a faithful member of the Waterloo Cedar Falls Corps of The Salvation Army. Graduating from Cedar Falls High School in 1965, she attended Vennard Bible College, during which time, after a courtship of over two years, she married David Cedervall on Dec. 17, 1966. After two years at the School for Officer Training in Chicago, on Sept. 13, 1969, she was ordained and commissioned as a member of the "Evangelists" Session of Salvation Army officers.

She, with David, had a beautiful team ministry in both the Central and Eastern USA Territories of The Salvation Army. They served in Indiana, at National Headquarters, New Jersey, Ohio, Eastern Territorial Headquarters where she was an editor's assistant, Niagara Falls, N.Y., and again finally at T.H.Q., this time as co-director of Bible Correspondence studies. Majors Cedervall had to go on sick leave on Sept. 1, 2009, and entered honored early retirement Nov. 1 of last year.

During their appointments at T.H.Q. Rose led a Women's Book Club at which a good number of employees have been nurtured and ministered to by Rose. The women held her in high esteem.

Predeceased by father, David E. Hoppes, and brothers, Thomas and Daniel Hoppes, Rose is survived by her dearly beloved husband of 43-plus years, Major David; sons, Nathan (Renee) of Edison, N.J., Captain Kevin (Bettie) of New Hope, Minn., and daughter, Jennifer (Jeremiah) Chainey of Hammonton, N.J.; mother, Mrs. Rose Hoppes of Waterloo; sister, Nancy Conner of Noblesville, Ind.; brothers, David J. Hoppes of Minneapolis and Tim Hoppes of Cedar Rapids. Major Rose dearly loved her six grandchildren and rejoiced in knowing a new grandson was expected this coming August to daughter Jennifer and husband Jeremiah Chainey.

Her first memorial service was held at Spring Valley, N.Y., on April 23. A "hometown" memorial service will be held at The Salvation Army Citadel, 89 Franklin St., Waterloo. The service, with Captain Gerald O'Neil officiating, will start at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 26.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to The Salvation Army.
