Greene – Mrs. Matt Merfeld, 80, at home of son, Verne [sic], near Dougherty, Saturday; born Mary E. Brunner, daughter of Michael and Katherine Brunner, in Winneshiek county, near Decorah; came to Floyd county near Greene with parents at age of six; married to Matt Merfeld in December, 1892; couple located on farm near Greene, where they lived until retiring several years ago: preceded in death by husband, July 24, 1950, and two sons, Henry in 1934, and Father Howard in 1935; leaves six sons, Roy, Bristow; Verne and Harry, Dougherty; Ed, George and Clyde, Greene; one daughter, Mrs. Paul Popes [sic, Carl?], Nashua; 29 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren; funeral Thursday morning at St. Patrick’s church, Dougherty, with burial in St. Mary’s cemetery, Greene.
