SMITH, MESCH, KEEN, THEIMAN, VAN DEEST, CUNNINGHAM, FIKE

CEDAR FALLS - Ronald Dean Smith, 82, of Cedar Falls, died Sunday, May 30, at home of cancer.

He was born on Oct. 13, 1927, in Manchester, son of George and Edna Mesch Smith. He married Betty Keen on April 16, 1949. She died July 1, 1982. He married Fay Theiman on May 15, 1985. She died Nov. 30, 2003.

Mr. Smith enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in Japan for two years during World War II. He worked on cab assembly for John Deere for 32 years until his retirement in 1984. He was active in Boy Scout Troop 117 from 1974 to 1982.

Survived by: three children, Linda Van Deest of Cedar Falls, Brian (Darcy) Smith of Waterloo and Robin Cunningham of Minnesota; a sister, Beatrice Fike of North Carolina; five grandchildren, Kenny Van Deest, Kim (Mark) Leadley, Tracey (Jeff) Osmundson, Caitlin Smith and Dalton Smith; and two great-grandchildren, Austin and Miranda Osmundson.

Preceded in death by: two wives, Betty and Fay; a brother, Bob; a brother-in-law, Robert Fike; and a sister-in-law, Connie Smith.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, Waterloo, with burial in Washburn Cemetery. Public visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Military rites conducted by Waterloo American Legion Becker-Chapman Post 138.

Memorials: may be directed to the family.

He loved camping, bowling, hunting, fishing, the Chicago Cubs, watching his grandkids play sports, stockcar racing and spending time with his family.
