Another Pioneer Is Gone

Death of Saml. D. Shaw

Came to Blackhawk in 1852 -- Resided in Orange, Waterloo and Cedar Falls Townships -- Was County Judge Five Years -- Held Other Trusty Places

From Thursday's Daily

Samuel D. Shaw, pioneer of Blackhawk county and for many years a prominent and well known citizen, died yesterday morning at 6:00 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. H. Eason, in Cedar Falls township, three and a half miles west of the state normal school. His age was 89 years, 2 months and 15 days. Mr. Shaw was born April 19, 1811, in Rutland county, Vermont, a son of Augustus Prudence Shaw, his father being a revolutionary soldier. After reaching manhood he went to St. Louis, Mo., where he was engaged in mercantile business for several years. He then moved to Lock, Licking county, Ohio, where he followed the same business and also served as a magistrate.

He was married there to miss Elizabeth Stoughton, daughter of Nathaniel Stoughton, who was among the early settlers of Licking county. They came to Blackhawk county in 1852 and settled in Orange township, where Mr. Shaw entered large tracts of government land. The county was sparsely settled and Waterloo was a cluster of a few small cabins. Mr. Shaw took an active interest in all enterprises for the growth and advancement of the community in which he had cast his lot and was ranked among the most public spirited citizens of the county. In 1862 he was elected county judge, which office he held for five years and enjoyed the confidence of his constituents through his entire term of office.

Later he served as a justice of the peace of Waterloo township and also as assessor. In the spring of 1884 he moved to Cedar Falls township, where he has since made his home.

Mrs. Shaw died several years ago. Two children survive their parents, Mrs. Sarah A. Eason, of Cedar Falls township, and Henry B. Shaw of Nora Springs. Also an adopted daughter, Mrs. Ellen Betts, of Benton county, Iowa. The son, Henry B., was a soldier in the civil war, serving with the Third Iowa infantry during its period of enlistment and receiving an honorable discharge at the close of the war. He was severely wounded once during his term of service.

The funeral took place this afternoon at the Congregational church in Cedar Falls, of which the deceased was a member, and was conducted by the pastor.
