Harry R. Jones, 29, Influenza Victim At Great Lakes

Waterloo Boy Dies in Service; Body Will Be Brought Home For Burial.

Harry Ross Jones died at the naval hospital, Great Lakes training station, at 6:50 p.m. yesterday. Word was received by his mother, Mrs. Sarah Johns, yesterday afternoon, stating that her son was seriously ill. She made arrangements to go to that place last night, but in the meantime received notice of her son's death. The type of his illness was not given in the message, but it is presumed he had fallen a victim to the Spanish influenza. His last letter home, received Saturday, told of its prevalence at the camp, but Private Jones stated he was all right at that time. However, relatives had been worried somewhat since they failed to receive his usual Sunday letter.

Was 29 Years Old

Sailor Jones would have been 29 years old Oct. 1. He had spent most of his life in Omaha. Prior to his enlistment he was foreman for a construction company there. When he entered the service last spring his mother, with whom he lived, gave up her home and came to live with her daughter, Mrs. Otis Lang, 828 Randolph street, Waterloo. Private Jones enlisted here May 28, 1918, as a first carpenter's mate, naval reserve corps. He was a member of the Odd Fellows, Eagles and Omaha Carpenters' union. Surviving him are his mother, Mrs. Sarah Johns, and sister, Mrs. Otis Lang, Waterloo; a brother and sister, Earl Jones and Mrs. James Matheney, Omaha, and a sister, Mrs. Carl Sassaman, Ottumwa. The body will be brought to Waterloo for burial. Funeral arrangements have not been made.
