Ellis J. Hoffman Critically Ill in Naval Hospital

Ellis J. Hoffman, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Hoffman, 1534 Second street west, is critically ill of pneumonia in the naval hospital in Philadelphia. His mother left for that place Sunday night in response to a message from the commanding medical officer there stating that her son's condition was serious. A message from Mrs. Hoffman, received last night, stated that while the patient was holding his own, his recovery was doubtful.

Ellis enlisted here last May and after a month's training was assigned to the battleship Kansas as a gunner. At the time he was taken ill he was receiving target instruction in Philadelphia.

Ellis J. Hoffman Dies of Pneumonia in Naval Hospital

Was Waterloo Volunteer, Enlisting Last May; Body Is En Route Home.

Ellis J. Hoffman, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Hoffman, died at the naval hospital, Philadelphia, at 12:30 a.m. last night. Pneumonia developing from Spanish influenza was the cause of death. Enlisting here last May, he was sent first to Great Lakes naval training station, and then to Hampton Roads, where he was assigned to the battleship Kansas as a guard. At the time he was taken ill he was receiving target instruction at Philadelphia.

Ellis Hoffman was born in De Kalb, Ill., May 13, 1897, and came to Waterloo with his parents eight years ago. He attended west high school and the Iowa State college at Ames. Surviving him are his parents, a sister, Miss Mildred, and a grandmother, Mrs. L. A. Sines, all residing at 1534 Second street west. His mother was with him at the time of his death, having left for Philadelphia Sunday in response to a telegram stating her son was dangerously ill.

Funeral arrangements have not been made, pending the arrival of the body, which left Philadelphia today.

Funeral services for Ellis Hoffman, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Hoffman, 1534 Second street west, were conducted this afternoon at the family home. Rev. Clyde J. Askins, pastor of First Baptist church, officiated, and interment was in Elmwood cemetery.
