WATERLOO — Edward James "Jim" Farmer, 74, of Ventura, Calif., formerly of Waterloo, died Wednesday, May 19, at West Los Angeles Veterans Hospital due to complications from a stroke.

He was born July 31, 1935, in Waterloo, son of Edward W. and Nelda Mertins Farmer.

Mr. Farmer, a graduate of East High School, joined the U.S. Army in 1953 and was a veteran of the Korean War. He then worked as a tool and die maker in Waterloo until moving to California in 1964, where he became an engineer working for many companies. Later he owned and operated Refurbishment Corp. of America and No. 1 Glass and Screen Co. until 1975, when he started Jim’s Farmer Real Estate inspections and later Jim Farmer’s Legal Support and Expert Witness Service.

Survived by: a son, Blaine (Vickie) of Midway, Texas; four daughters, Irene Farmer of Evansdale, Alice (Thom) Pitts and Kristine (Tim) Wilson, both of Tulsa, Okla., and Alexa (Aaron) Ross of Moorpark, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: a son, James Patrick Farmer.

Celebration of Life memorial: 1 p.m. today at Rancho Tapo Community Park and Veterans Plaza, 3700 Avenida Simi, Simi Valley, Calif.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Diabetes Association.
