WATERLOO - Lyle J. Birks, 73, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, May 18, at Manor Care Health Services.

He was born Aug. 30, 1936, in Marshalltown, son of Francis and Clara Zdrazil Birks. He married Joyce Nelson on Aug. 26, 1961, in Marshalltown.

Mr. Birks was a sports journalist with the Marshalltown Times Republican newspaper and later was employed in sales with the Vernon Co. of Newton. He owned and operated Gibson Specialty Co. in Waterloo for 27 years, retiring in 2005. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Waterloo Elks Club.

Survived by: his wife; three daughters, Jodi (Greg) Alberts and Jennifer (Nick) Robertson, both of Des Moines and Julie (Matt) Kolpin of Youngsville, N.C.; two sons, Duc (Phuong) Vo of Los Alamos, N.M., and Trung (Mai) Vo of Charleston, S.C.; 11 grandchildren; and a sister, Delores (Bob) Heenan of Omaha, Neb.

Preceded in death by: a son, Timothy, in infancy.

Memorial services: 11 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with inurnment in Riverside Cemetery, Marshalltown. Public visitation from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 4 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service.

Memorials: may be directed to the church or the Knights Of Columbus.

Lyle was a beloved Iowa Hawkeye fan and an avid golfer.
