WATERLOO — Berdean "Deanie" Zabel, 78, of Santa Rosa, Calif., formerly of Waterloo, died Monday, May 10, at home.

She was born Sept. 1, 1931, in Waterloo, daughter of Leonard Frye and Cora Gray-Frye. She married Carl Zabel in 1977 in Waterloo. He preceded her in death.

Mrs. Zabel worked for Rath Packing Co. for 28 years, retiring in 1979. She also had managed Alpine Apartments, Hayward, Calif., for 24 years.

Survived by: two sons, Dan Taylor of Central Point Ore., and David

VanArsdale of Santa Rosa, Calif.; three daughters, Sabrina VanArsdale of Santa Rosa, Calif., Tina Strayer of Cedar Falls and Angela Moore of Hayward; two sisters, Helen Gilbert and Betty Briscoe, both of Waterloo; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: a brother, Junior Frye; and a sister, Evelyn Shipp.

Memorial service: 11 a.m. Saturday, June 5, at Jess C. Spenser Mortuary, Castro Valley, Calif.

Deanie enjoyed cooking big family dinners, barbecues and friendly poker games. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be sorrowfully missed by her family and all of those who knew her.
