Page 7Defiant Of Death, Corp. Hardinger Fell While Fighting
Private Dewey R. Lahue, a Vinton boy, has written home describing the manner in which Corp. George Hardinger, Co. H, 168th infantry, Rainbow division, met his death on Sept. 13, 1918. "The company was advancing up a hill when they received orders to halt and lay low," he stated. "I saw George drop into a shellhole, but a few minutes later looked over and he was on his knees, half his body exposed, shooting like blazes at a German machine gunner.
"I hollered at him to keep down or he would get shot to pieces by the machine gunners, but my warning came too late. George was shot square between the eyes, but a little later we got the word to advance and then we got the man that killed poor George.
"Corporal Hardinger was given a military burial and is lying at rest on the top of the hill on which he was killed.
