WATERLOO - Shirley L. Stewart, 88, of Waterloo, formerly of Cedar Falls, died Thursday, April 15th at the Friendship Village Medical Center.

She was born March 10, 1922, in Oakland, Iowa, daughter of Albert and Vera Cleveland. Shirley married James C. Stewart in Cedar Falls on June 16, 1944. James preceded her in death in Feb. 2008.

Shirley graduated from the Malcolm Price Laboratory High School in 1939 and from the Iowa State Teachers College in 1943. She taught school in Fonda, IA for a year and then taught as a substitute teacher in the Waterloo Community School District until Jan. of 1948 when she retired to become a full time mother and homemaker.

Mrs. Stewart was active in Westminster Presbyterian Church serving as a Sunday School teacher, Bible Study Leader and Elder. She was a member of Presbyterian Women, Priscilla Circle, Friday Study Club and the Westmixers group. Shirley was active in the Chancel Choir for many years and held music as a favorite part of her faith and worship. She also served on several committees for the North Central Iowa Presbytery.

Shirley was a long time member of the National Pen women's Society and P.E.O. She was a semi professional writer and wrote prolifically throughout her career. Shirley referred to herself as a "writerholic" and had many articles, stories and poems published during her life. She and her husband Jim spent many happy weekends in Wisconsin, over a number of years, researching and gathering information for articles Shirley was writing about the hiking and biking trails and waterways for the Wisconsin Tales and Trails Magazine. Shirley co-authored a book with her husband Jim, titled, "Easy Going, A Comprehensive Guide to Grant, Iowa, and Lafayette Counties" in Wisconsin. This was published in 1976, by Tamarack Press, copywrite Wisconsin Tales and Trails.

Survived by: Brother, William Cleveland of Seattle, Wash.; three children, Marilyn (John) Penne, of New Bern, N.C., John (Deborah), and Roger both of Waterloo; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: her parents, an infant brother, Alman Milton Cleveland and her husband.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Westminster Presbyterian Church with burial in Elmwood Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Public visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Richardson Funeral Home in Cedar Falls and for one hour prior to services at the church.
