WATERLOO — Charlie J. Burke, 73, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, April 20, [2010] at Ravenwood Nursing & Rehab Center from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

He was born Feb. 18, 1937, in Waverly, son of Lafe M. and Hazel Kateley Burke. He married Sharon Rowell on Aug. 22, 1959, in Ventura, Calif.

Mr. Burke was employed as a switchman with Illinois Central Railroad from 1963 to 1966. He then served in the U.S. Navy during the Cuban missile crisis. He was employed with Northwestern Bell Telephone Co., then with John Deere for 31 years, retiring in 1997. He then worked at Omega Cabinets for four years.

Survived by: his wife; two daughters, Denise (Tom) Mulnix of Waterloo and Denell (Bill III) Henninger of Newton; a son, Darren (Tammy) of Cedar Falls; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jane (Greg) Gingrich of Chicago and Pat (Don) Courter of Davenport; and a brother, Bill (Cathy) of Hudson.

Preceded in death by: two brothers, Jim and Jerry; and his parents.

Services: 10 a.m. Friday at Grace Reformed Church, with burial in Waterloo Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by Waterloo AMVETS Post 19, Evansdale AMVETS Post 31 and the Iowa Army National Guard. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, and for an hour before services Friday at the church.
