Sylvia Rosina Hansen was born Jan. 2, 1918, in Dike, daughter of Robert Benjamin and Mathilda "Tillie" Christine Hansen.

She was raised in Dike and graduated from Dike High School in 1935. Following high school, she took the train to Des Moines and enrolled in a business school. Upon finishing her schooling she returned home, worked for a time for the post office, and then began in 1946 with Waterloo Savings Bank in Waterloo. She worked there for 38 years, retiring in 1984 from the loan department.

Sylvia married Ralph H. McKinder on Feb. 12, 1939, at Fredsville Lutheran Church, rural Dike. Ralph died June 22, 1975. She and Ralph were very active in Masonic groups, especially El Kahir Shrine, Shrine Oriental Band, Shrine Auxiliary, and Order of Eastern Star. She was also a member of American Legion Auxiliary, Waterloo Elklets Lodge, Cedar Valley Danes, Waterloo Garden Club and a lifetime member of the Dike Legion Auxiliary.

On Nov. 21, 1987, she married Cletus Schnoebelen in Jesup. Cletus died Sept. 10, 1997. Sylvia was a very giving person, especially to her extended family of nieces and nephews. She was very proud of her Danish heritage and would pass on family history to members of her family. There are many happy memories of the cabin on the Wapsi River near Independence, fishing in Minnesota, Sylvia and Ralph at school activities, and Sylvia's love of entertaining.
