WATERLOO - John E. Hawse, 88, of Waterloo, died Saturday, April 17, at Covenant Medical Center.

He was born March 28, 1922, in Peoria, Ill., son of Ray M. and Cecil Ruth Minteer Hawse. He married Lillian Carney on Dec. 25, 1945, in Batavia, Ill. She died Jan. 1, 1986. He married Aileen May Heath Lawrence on Sept. 17, 1994, in Waterloo.

Mr. Hawse graduated from Batavia High School in Batavia, Ill. in 1941. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a journeyman patternmaker for 10 years. He received a bachelor's and master's degree at Bradley University and a doctor of education degree at University of Northern Colorado. He taught high school and college level classes, was in administration as high school principal, high school counselor, president of the community college in Sidney, Neb., and the second president of Hawkeye Institute of Technology, Waterloo.

Survived by: his wife; three daughters, Kathleen (Allen) Bodenlos of Grays Lake, Ill., Judith Carpenter of Louisville, Ky., and Sharon (Rev. Dr. David) Esche of Geneso, Ill.; a stepdaughter, Lori( Bruce) Dieckman of Denver, Colo.; a stepson, Scott (Erica) Lawrence of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a brother, Robert Hawse of Batavia, Ill.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a stepgrandchild.

Preceded in death by: a brother, Oren; a sister, Florence in infancy; and a great-granddaughter, Katelyn Elizabeth Jones.

Memorial services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 1, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, with burial in River Hills Cemetery, Batavia, at a later date. Public visitation for an hour before services at the church. Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: may be directed to Hawse Family Scholarship Fund at Hawkeye Community College, 1501 E. Orange Road, Waterloo or Westminster Presbyterian Church.
