CEDAR FALLS - Enola Glenda Harberts died on April 12, 2010, after 86 years of serving her Lord. After a short stay at the Western Home Communities Martin Center in Cedar Falls, she was taken home to forever praise Him on High.
Enola Glenda Jacobs was born to Elra A. Jacobs and Frieda R. Bruns Jacobs on Jan. 28, 1924, in Lyon County. She grew up on a farm outside of George, with her younger sister, Norma. After completing high school in George, Enola attended Iowa State Teachers College for one year. She went on to teach at a rural school north of George and then at Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.
On June 10, 1943, Enola married Dick Frederick Harberts in Glendale, Calif., while he was on leave from the Army. To this union the couple was blessed with a set of twin boys, Steven and Stewart, and four more boys: Sidney, Paul, Craig and Clark. While Dick went to seminary, Enola was a stay-at-home mother. During her husband's career as a Presbyterian minister, Enola also worked in the church, busy with committees, and serving in any way she could. They served churches in Steamboat Rock, Jefferson, Postville and Mechanicsville. On July 1, 1985, Dick and Enola retired from the ministry and made their home in Waterloo. They moved to the Western Home Communities in Cedar Falls in May of 2004.
Enola is survived by her loving husband, Dick; her sister, Norma and brother-in-law, David Visser of George; and her sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and Denise of Berwyn, Pa., Stewart and Renae of Essex, Sidney and Maxine of Grundy Center, Paul and Lynette of Rochester, Minn., Craig and Dorothy of San Clemente, Calif., and Clark and Julie of Cedar Rapids. Also surviving Enola are 16 grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
Preceding Enola in death were her parents, Elra and Frieda Jacobs, and her granddaughter, Melissa Harberts.
Public visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 16, at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball. A private burial will take place in Garden of Memories Cemetery, Waterloo, on April 17 at 10 a.m. A memorial service will follow at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. Lunch will be served following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the University of Dubuque, 2000 University Ave., Dubuque, IA 52001.
Enola was a strong Christian woman. She will be remembered for her faithfulness to her Lord. We thank God for the gift of her life!
