CEDAR FALLS - Irene A. Nissen, 84, of Cedar Falls, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008 at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home from complications of leukemia.

She was born March 22, 1923, in Elk Horn, daughter of George and Esther Louise Dahl Petersen. She married Raymond A. Nissen on Feb. 21, 1945, in Elk Horn. He died March 20, 1995.

Mrs. Nissen earned a bachelor's degree in education and later a master's degree in library science from the University of Northern Iowa. She taught elementary school in several locations prior to moving to Cedar Falls in 1966. She was a third-grade teacher at Humbert and Lincoln Elementary Schools in Cedar Falls, retiring in 1988. She was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church and taught Sunday School for many years.

Survivors include: three sons, Luther Lynn (Avise) of Mount Ranier, Md., Bruce Allen (Karen) of Hollywood, Fla., and Marlin Ray of Cedar Falls; and four grandsons, Samuel, Leif, Jared and Martin.

Preceded in death by: her parents; two brothers, Gordon and Phil Petersen; and a sister, Norma Molgaard.

Memorial services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Nazareth Lutheran Church, with luncheon to follow. Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball, Waterloo, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: may be directed to Nazareth Lutheran Church Sunday School program.

Irene's other memberships include the Cedar Valley Danes and Black Hawk Retired School Personnel. She was an avid reader and enjoyed studying the Bible.
