In 1950, they moved to Hampton, Iowa, where Bite ran the local airport and the Western Auto Store. Their daughter Susan was born there in 1951. They returned to Cedar Falls and Bite owned and operated Livingston Skelgas Service in Waterloo.

In addition to raising her children, Dorothy was an active volunteer in the Sartori Hospital Gift Shop, a member of DAR, and a Girl Scout Leader for her daughter's Brownie Troop. She was an accomplished pianist and a voracious reader and passed her love of music and literature to her three daughters.
